The Fog in Treasure Maps

What do sleepiness, going blank, and getting confused have in common? They’re all manifestations of what we call The Fog... and there is treasure there! Read on below...

The Fog Just Rolled In

It happens when you’re in the middle of a deep Focusing session. Just as you’re in touch with something that feels important, just as you’re about to sense more deeply what it’s about.... the Fog rolls in! Either you get terribly sleepy, or you go suddenly blank and can’t remember what you were saying, or you get very confused.

Don’t stop Focusing! (Well, you can if you want, but you can also try this instead...) See what happens if you treat the experience of getting sleepy or blank or confused as if it is a part of you bringing in Fog. Bringing it in for some good reason.

Start by saying Hello to the Fog and trusting that it has SOME good reason to be here. Very likely you’ll find your relationship to the whole issue shifting.

No Faster Than the Slowest Part

In our experience, Fog often rolls in because some part of us is worried, maybe worried that the process is going too fast for safety. It’s amazing how often our foggy brains come back on line after acknowledging that something may be feeling unsafe, or needing to go slower.

It can be helpful to remind ourselves that we cannot go faster than our slowest part is ready for. We can’t! Not and get real, true transformation. So we might as well slow down.

Think of Fog as something in you calling for a little break. You might want to stretch, look around the room, take a few deep breaths. Gather Presence: feel the contact of your body resting on what you're sitting on.

Then acknowledge that there might be something in you needing you to take more time, or needing to be safe, or needing something. And just sense if that’s right.

Warning: it usually doesn’t work very well to acknowledge sleepiness. You’ll very likely go right to sleep! We're not suggesting that here. We’re suggesting acknowledging something in you that's bringing the sleepiness. Try it; we think you’ll find it very interesting.
