“I just can't seem to get around to
• getting that book finished
• starting that exercise program
• organizing my papers
• finishing my resumé
• making those calls. ...”
“I don't understand it... I love to write (paint, play music...) – I just don't do it!”
When we don’t do what we want to do, that is an action block.
Sometimes we don't do what we should do...
Sometimes we don't do what we love to do...
It's natural and human to procrastinate sometimes. But when those blocks persist, month after month, even year after year, this becomes a painful and distressing situation.
Let me tell you more about a Focusing workshop I've created to help you with just this issue...
Feeling Stuck is No
Fun
I know. I had writer's block, serious writer's block. The problem was, all I really wanted was to write! So my friends would hear me moaning, “I want to write! I really do! I just don’t understand why I don’t!”
The Focusing process as I was doing it at that time didn’t help me. I just sat down and felt how bad I felt about not writing. I had inner critics who attacked me, told me I was lazy, weak, hopeless. That just made me feel lower than a worm, but no writing came forth.
Then one day, in desperation, I sat down and invited something in me that didn’t WANT to write. (I figured, there must be something like that, even though I’m not in touch with it at all!) The idea of Focusing by inviting a part of me that I wasn’t feeling was radical. But the results!
The Part the Doesn't Want To
Just one session of listening to “the part that doesn’t want to” brought somewhat more ease in writing. After a few months of returning to this kind of Focusing process every few weeks, I had a breakthrough session, in which a part of me that didn’t want to write turned around and joined the inner writer. From that moment on, I woke up in the morning and felt “Oh boy, let's write!”
The Pattern of Rebellion and Other Old Friends
Since that amazing work, I’ve developed quite an interest in releasing action blocks. I've identified four “patterns” that are typical in blocking action:
• The Pattern of Protection
• The Pattern of Rebellion
• The Pattern of Unfinished Business
• The Pattern of Inner Guidance
And of course I’ve found that our old friend the Inner Critic (or “inner criticizing process” as I prefer to call it) plays a big role in blocked action – but not always the role you’d expect!
What Happens in the Workshop
In this highly experiential workshop we will learn a series of moves designed to release the dynamic that holds the action block in place.
This includes transforming the inner critic and learning how to listen non-judgmentally to the action block.
You’ll probably find that the part of you that doesn’t want to do the action has a good reason for blocking you – and when that is heard compassionately, the blocked flow gets moving again, often in surprising ways. You may find you have gifts in surprising places! And you may find that what you thought you wanted was merely a compromise solution, and what you can really have is much bigger.
You will receive a workbook containing all the exercises that we will do, so that you can take them home and repeat them whenever you need to, with any blocked area of your life.
And you will be with other people dealing with similar issues, so you can exchange inspiration and support.
Prerequisite:
You must have had at least one individual session with any Focusing teacher prior to attending this workshop.
Releasing Blocks to Action is taught as a two-day workshop and also as a five-week telecourse. For the next dates and further information on registration click here.
