Philosophy, Focusing & Changing the World
A 5-week phone course with Eugene Gendlin and Ann Weiser Cornell
"Hearing Gene for the first time in ten years was a treat - he displayed his usual talent for welcoming everything and then taking it farther. Having him paired with Ann, who brings not only her extensive experience of teaching Focusing, but her gift for a process that's both personal and effective, seems ideal. Ann's facilitation was masterful, managing time and the mechanics of participation well, elaborating where she felt it was needed. Gene showed both his almost impish joy in living and his pointed and discerning mind when it comes to Focusing - a wonderful teaching combination." –Dick Ridington
How we think and understand the world is important, and not only because thinking leads to productive action joined with others. The trouble is that when we try to think about what goes on around us, we run up against a dichotomy. On the one hand we have clear categories that create technology but cannot possibly enable us to think about ourselves or society. On the other hand, we have our feelings and our senses of wrongness and rightness, but how do we think and speak from there?
At the exciting leading edge of his philosophy, Gendlin has a new way of forming concepts with the felt sense. This resolves dualities and dichotomies, as we understand that what's real is neither made up only of defined units nor is it the least bit arbitrary. The implicit is different from either of those two. The implicit is a forward implying, not already finished.
Perhaps we have been feeling hopeless and stuck about the larger movements of society. But Focusing lets a felt sense come – and that can change the world. Join us in exploring the implications for living things, human beings, organizations, economics, and society.
Pre-requisite: There are no pre-requisites, however those with some familiarity with Focusing and Gendlin’s Philosophy of the Implicit will probably have an easier time grasping where this course goes.
Fee: $195 until March 7, then $245
Where: By phone seminar
How phone seminars work
All you need is a phone, no special equipment, though a hands-free headset is helpful. Yes, you can even call with a cell phone or Skype, as long as the line is reasonably clear. When you register, you'll receive a special number to call, and your own PIN code. You'll be on a conference call with the teacher and a group of friendly fellow professionals. The teacher will be able to moderate the call from a master control panel. There will be lectures, question periods, and group exercises. We've been doing phone seminars since 2003 and we're old hands at it – and they work amazingly well.
